Middle America is being hit the hardest in these times of economic unrest. When confronted with factories closing, prices rising, and no bright future in sight, what's a person to do? I'll give you a hint: it has absolutely no bearing on economics.
Well, it sort of makes sense. In big cities people put their faith in the Invisible Hand, and in small towns people put their faith in the Invisible Jesus. Interestingly, neither invisible character had one thing to say about keeping poor people from suffering on earth. And it seems that both are doing about equally well at keeping Americans employed.
Hell, at least Invisible Jesus included some sort of other-worldly reward for struggling people. Adam Smith and Malthus wrote the poor into the equation as the toilet paper that keeps we luxuriously rich people from having to touch our own shit.
